A firearm is a weapon that discharges a projectile by means of an explosive force whereas a gun is simply a weapon that uses the force generated by an explosive to shoot projectiles. While you may have heard someone say that handguns are firearms, they are actually known by their particular class of gun, such as a 9mm handgun or a .30 caliber rifle. Technically all firearms have guns but all guns do not have firearms to fire them, can you think of any other examples?

By definition, a firearm is a weapon that discharges a projectile by means of an explosive force. Guns and firearms are sometimes used interchangeably, however, firearms are not to be confused with guns. Guns are simply weapons that fire projectiles, such as handguns or rifles. The terms are often used interchangeably, and in the United States, you do not need a license to own either a gun or a firearm.

Do you need a license to own a gun?

It is important to know the laws and regulations that surround gun ownership in the state you live in. Some state licenses are required to own guns and some states require a license to sell guns. Guns should be merely one part of your personal safety plan, which includes home security and lifestyle awareness. Guns are legal products used by many people for saving lives, protecting property, and hunting animals.

These weapons create high velocities for attacking at a distance and are used to cause harm to something or someone. The use of guns is prohibited in public areas as it poses a threat to the general people, who at times may get involved in an unexpected incident. In various states, the right to carry a pistol or revolver is granted. Gun ownership comes with responsibilities which may include rituals of clearing and cleaning the weapons after using them, storing them safely under lock and key, etc. However, guns can also cause an extreme amount of damage if they get into the wrong hands. Today there are about 200 million firearms in the United States, so it’s important to know how to prevent unauthorized access.  For more information on this subject, you can contact the local government or an expert firearms instructor.

Why are firearms called guns?

Ever wonder why we call guns “guns”? The reason for this is straightforward; guns are, in fact, called guns due to their appearance. The earliest hand-held firearms, which were used in the 1500s, were long-barreled weapons with a thick stock made of wood or metal and had to be held with both hands. The stock looked like and resembled that of a musket when it was not being fired while, while the barrel and handle extended out the front end. As an early firearm became known as a musket, so did its modern counterpart over the centuries!
